is a city located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Its name literally means "the end of salt" or "salt butt".
As of February 1, 2006, the city has an estimated population of 68,231 and a population density of 235.17 persons per km². The total area is 290.18 km².
==History==
Municipal Area Changes
* April 1, 1927 - The village of Shiojiri was elevated to town status.
* April 1, 1959 - The city was founded when the town of Shiojiri absorbed the villages of Kataoka, Hirooka, Souga and Chikumazi.
* April 1, 1960 - The city lost Kitauchida hamlet (of the Kataoka ward) to the city of Matsumoto.
* April 1, 1961 - The city lost Gakenoyu hamlet (of the Kataoka ward) to the city of Matsumoto.
* June 28, 1961 - The city absorbed the village of Seba.
* May 1, 1968 - Nishichikuma District changed their name to Kiso District.
* April 1, 1982 - The city surrendered parts of Seba (eastside of airport) to the city of Matsumoto.
* April 1, 2005 - The city absorbed the village of Narakawa (from Kiso District).
